Transgender & Gender Nonconforming Support

The Center offers a safe, affirming environment for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) community members to receive care, find services, and connect with community members who share similar identities and experiences.

Beginning with The Center’s Gender Identity Project in 1989, our services have evolved to include a wide range of transgender-focused care, support, and advocacy.

Youth Services

At The Center, we believe transgender youth deserve to celebrate who they are, what makes them unique, and why they matter. Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth, especially TGNC youth of color, face increasing attacks. We provide a safe, inclusive, affirming environment where TGNC youth can connect with peers, build leadership skills, and take care of their mental and physical health.

Youth aged 13–22 are welcome to participate in our in-person and virtual programs, services, and events. For those outside of the age range, we encourage you to share this information with the TGNC youth in your community.

Defining Transgender

Transgender is an adjective and should never be used as a noun.

Transgender may be used to describe someone who was assigned female or male at birth, but later realizes that label doesn’t accurately reflect who they are inside.

Some transgender people may now live life as a man or woman, or may feel that their gender identity can’t be described by either term (man or woman). Some people’s identity might exist between the two binaries or outside of the binary system entirely—neither male nor female.

This applies to those who feel they don’t fit within society’s standards of how women and men are supposed to look and act (gender nonconforming).

While transgender is a relatively new word, it is not a new concept. Gender nonconforming people have existed across various time periods and cultures throughout human history.

A transgender identity is not dependent upon medical procedures.

Some transgender people have surgeries, or take hormones, to bring their body into alignment with their gender identity. But, many do not and that doesn’t mean they’re not transgender.

You might think someone is transgender, but this is a personal identity that some people claim and others do not.

Wait to see how someone self-identifies (or ask, respectfully) before assuming.
