The Center's Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling Overturning Roe v. Wade

June 24, 2022

The Center’s Statement

Today the Supreme Court has issued a ruling that eliminates the constitutional right to abortion and endangers the lives of millions of Americans. The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade encroaches on the bodily autonomy of birthing people. Many Americans will experience severe and negative impacts on their health, and lives will be lost.

The Supreme Court is responsible for ensuring more Americans have access to the health care they need but has instead made a decision that perpetuates sexist, misogynistic, and antiquated ideals.

We are especially concerned about the consequences for LGBTQ+ people, including transgender men and other gender-nonconforming people. We believe that reproductive rights are LGBTQIA+ rights and that all members of our communities deserve medical care that affirms them and keeps them safe.

Further, we know the impacts of this decision will be deadly and disproportionately impact those who have historically faced systemic racism and discrimination. We’re furious and worried about the effect it will have across the country on Black and Latine people, youth, and poor people.

While we recognize that New Yorkers have legally guaranteed access to safe reproductive care, we are also aware that the consequences of this decision will result in abortion bans in other states across the country. We’re recommitting ourselves to continue defending our country’s fundamental rights currently under attack.
