Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis: Coloniality and the Clinic: A case presentation by Abdel Aziz Al Bawab, MD (registration required)

This presentation draws on the work of the Martiniquan psychiatrist and decolonial thinker, Frantz Fanon, to explore a clinical case of psychosis through Fanonian themes of navigating a racialized, colonial world. The discussion highlights the significance of attending to the social unconscious in clinical practice, and raises questions about the role of the clinician.
Abdel Aziz Al Bawab, MD is an Attending Psychiatrist at the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, where he received the Excellence in Psychiatry award. He completed his psychiatry residency training at the University of New Mexico, where he was chief resident of psychotherapy. Dr. Al Bawab is a recipient of the 4th Annual Austen Riggs award for Excellence in Psychotherapy, and teaches psychiatry residents about psychodynamic theory and liberatory approaches to clinical practice. His lectures have been featured on the Rendering Unconscious podcast, and his recent writings appeared in ROOM: A sketchbook for Analytic Action.
