Trans Day of Remembrance is recognized annually on November 20. In 2022, The Center is honoring the day with a vigil ceremony in partnership with Housing Works and an interactive altar within our building.
We spoke with some members of the committee that created these moments of recognition, about their thoughts on Trans Day of Remembrance and the things that give them hope.
“Commemoration of all transgender people lost to violent crimes.” – Michelle Cintron (she/her)
“To immortalize the lost lives of our trans community that continues to suffer from discrimination and violence.” – Leo Salazar (he/him)
“Acknowledging, remembering, and healing.” – Nathalie Chara (she/her)
“I think it gives them a moment to pay their respects, to acknowledge what has occurred and to remember and heal.” – Michelle
“Reflect, give respect, honor, and provide the support that this community needs. Actions more than Words.” – Leo
“Provide a space to hold their grief for a little bit and share in this as a community. Grief can be huge and heavy to hold on your own. We hope people can share in that together to find a lightness—even if for a few moments.” – Nathalie
“That there is slow but some change when it comes to transgender people in the world.” – Michelle
“Connecting and working in a community with and for our trans people.” – Leo
“Finding joy at work and the work that we do to help strengthen community.” – Nathalie

“Educate and reach out to organizations that aim to support our trans community and LOVE. Unidos somos mas fuertes!” – Leo
“We’re providing links to BIPOC TGNC orgs during the vigil. These links will showcase orgs and link folx to donating to them. Resources are vital and scarce so let’s direct support to those who work on the ground.” – Nathalie
“I will remember every trans person that I knew and didn’t know that has passed due to violence. More than 32 trans individuals have been brutally killed this year alone. They all mean a life taken too soon, and the necessity for change.” – Michelle
“All transgender people who have died from violent acts. We cannot let their lives and fight be forgotten.” – Leo
“I have a friend who was lost this year that I will place on the altar. They were a light when things were hard and I will always remember them for that.” – Nathalie

• Support BIPOC-led trans and gender nonconforming organizations in New York City
• Take the U.S. Trans Survey by December 5, 2022. This is the largest survey of trans people, by trans people, in the United States.
