The Center joins New York’s LGBTQIA+ community in mourning the passing of beloved author, activist, storyteller, mother, sister, friend, and advocate, Cecilia Gentili.
A proud transgender Latina, Cecilia was a celebrated and incomparable member of our community. She spent many years championing equity and liberation, never shying away from speaking truth to power on transgender rights and demanding justice in our city and state. Having lived as an undocumented immigrant and as a sex worker, Cecilia was both open with her life experiences and unwavering in her pursuit to decriminalize sex work in New York, always ensuring everyone she met knew that sex work is work and that all labor is deserving of safety and respect.
Cecilia was a longtime member, a friend of The Center, and a former employee. In 2022, we were proud to honor and celebrate Cecilia’s impact at our annual Center Dinner gala with the Visibility Award. The Center will forever be grateful to Cecilia for her tireless work to uplift our community and for her legacy that will live on. Thank you for simply being, Cecilia! We will miss you!
