Scope and Content
The majority of the content is newsletters to Petalouthas members describing upcoming events, meetings and news. Included is a small selection of advertisements for Petalouthas placed in various publications. The collection also includes correspondence related to the book American Aphrodite: Becoming Female in Greek America by Constance Callinicos, and a selection of newsletters, flyers and articles from the Greek Gay & Lesbian Association (GGALA) established in 1993 in New York City. A felt Petalouthas banner was removed to the Ephemera Collection during processing.
History or Bio
Petalouthas, which means “butterflies” in Greek, was established in 1987 for professional Greek gay women in New York City. The organization disbanded in the early 1990s and included approximately 50 members.
