Scope and Content

This collection is comprised of love letters and a few personal photos all addressed to Marc Sokol. All but three are from Miguel Angelo de Sousa in Rio, Brazil, who makes frequent references to his ex-wife, children, illness, surgeries, and anxiety concerning the future. Some of the letters are authored in English; others have been translated by a friend into English. The letters to Miguel are not included.

History or Bio

Marc Sokol met Miguel Angelo Cavalcanti Rodrigues de Sousa on a one week trip to Rio de Janeiro for New Year’s 1984.  They met at a gay disco in Copacabana and spent the week together. At the time Sokol was in his last year of undergraduate school.  After Sokol returned to the States, the pair corresponded for the next six months and after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Sokol decided to go back to Brazil in the fall of 1984. Sokol and de Sousa were off and on again for the next five years. De Sousa is a plastic surgeon and divorced father of 3, Guileherme, Flavio, and Julia.  Miguel’s ex-wife, Teresa, also came out of the closet and moved to the United States. These letters are the letters De Sousa wrote Sokol during the first six months of their long distance relationship.
