Step 1: Find your Reps
Start by finding your State Senator and Assembly Members’ contact information here or by calling the State Senate Switchboard (518.455.2800) and the State Assembly Switchboard (518.455.4218). You can also make a direct call to the Governor’s office (518.474.8390).
Step 2: Call and leave a message
Whether you speak directly with a staff member or leave a voicemail, your message will get through! Share this simple and direct message:
- Right now in New York, if someone violently attacks or murders an LGBTQ person, state law allows them to blame their actions on the victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity to reduce the sentence for their crime.
- When our state allows this gay/trans “panic” defense to be used in court, it sends a disturbing message that violence against LGBTQ people is understandable and acceptable.
- Will you support A8375/S6573, a bill that would ban the use of gay/trans “panic” defense and prevent homophobia and transphobia from being used to justify violence against LGBTQ people?
Step 3: Report back
Let us know how your call went and who you spoke with (if applicable) by filling out the below form.
