This collection contains the personal papers of gay activist Michael O’Grady, documenting his work in the New York City gay community in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The political portion of O’Grady’s papers include pamphlets, flyers, meeting agendas, minutes, and notes from a number of NYC-area and national gay advocacy groups; campaign materials for politicians who supported gay and lesbian rights; and material from religious organizations both friendly and hostile to the gay and lesbian cause. There are also letters, statistics, legal and bibliographical information chronicling early responses to the AIDS crisis in the NYC area. The collection includes information related to other specific causes and protests related to lesbian and gay rights, such as a municipal gay rights bill and a protest against the film “Cruising.” There is also some material related to artistic movements in the gay community. Finally, the collection includes two folders of email print-outs and personal correspondence sent and received by gay activists Marc Rubin and Peter Fisher, dated from 2000 to 2003.
