281. Decertification of GALA/NY for National GALA office January 1983 and harassment of Don Barrington
[Notes on Decertification of GL/New York:] The Gay Atheist Newsletter began in April 1979. (It appears that Tom Rolfson was the founder of the GALA in San Francisco.) The first meeting of GALA/NY was at Don Barrington’s apartment. He and Mark Pearson were the in President position. During 1981 Dominic Florio appears in the officer list and became a very good spokesperson for GALA (Donahue Show, WBAI radio talk show, national convention speaker). Dominic Florio was elected president in October 1981 and the group seemed to fall apart. Don Barrington and Mark Pearson said that meetings were not open, newsletters not sent, membership not kept per the constitution (copy not found). Dominic said that Don Barrington and Mark Pearson were disruptive and only wanted to party. The national office in San Francisco could not reconcile the two sides, the national vice president in Dallas supported Dominic Florio. On February 1, 1983 the National Executive Committee “decertified” the GALA/NY Chapter. In August of 1983 the GALA/NY started newsletters again. Mark Pearson and Don Barrington became officers again. See Center Archive collection folder for list of correspondence tracking the battles.]

Don Barrington which was his stage name, his birth name was Peter Donald Doyle per his birth certificate (date of birth 6/15/1937. box #2), Social Security, medical records and pension record show the Doyle name. An early resume with a Scranton, PA address shows the name Don Doyle, a later resume with a Miami, FL address (an electric bill from FL shows a date of 1973) shows a name of Don Barrington. A letter dated July 19, 1983 says he changed his name when he joined Actors Equity “since there was already a member of the union named Don Doyle.” He was an actor, author and director, and was the main force behind the Village Playwrights (formerly called Gay and Lesbian Playwrights) which performed at the LGBT Community Center on West 13th Street, New York, NY and other theaters. He also did temporary work, at least in 1987. His records include forms from Screen Actors Guild for residuals for commercial from Dentrol (denture adhesive?) and Miller Lite (beer).

He was also active in the New York Chapter of Gay Atheist League (GALA/NY), and received a lot of harassment against him when the NY chapter was decertified. [History note: “The GALA was formed in San Francisco in 1978. It has seven Chapters in the United States and a membership of approximately 600. The New York Chapter of GALA was also founded in 1978.” New York City News/Northeast ALIVE, February 17, 1982] See the description for Box 8 for further details on GALA/NY.

Village Playwrights section:
Started in 1985 as Gay and Lesbian Playwrights and in September 1986 changed to Village Playwrights a gay & lesbian playwrights group. This group sponsored readings, workshops and lectures on the craft of writing for the stage. They met at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center (208 West 13th Street, New York City), The readings were performed at GAY PERFORMANCES at the Center and had a director, performers with a bio of experience, lights and sound operator, etc.. Occasionally the readings were at a theater such as Wings or Riverwest Theatre. Village Playwrights is still active at the Center as of April 2009. Box # 1 has most of the scripts, programs, flyers for Village Playwrights. Other boxes also have scripts but we do not know if they were performed in New York City.

Note: Don Barrington is also in the Leonard Fink photograph collection 026.
