A Statement from Shijuade Kadree, Chief Advocacy Officer at The Center
The Center is horrified by Trump Administration’s efforts to eliminate civil rights for nearly 2 million transgender, gender nonconforming and nonbinary people. This reckless and inhumane attack on the lives of nearly 2 million transgender, gender nonconforming and nonbinary individuals could effectively undo the precedent set by dozens of federal courts that have affirmed the full rights and protections against discrimination for people who identify along the gender spectrum for over two decades. This proposal would severely hinder the application of our current civil rights laws, limiting how those within our community access vital services like healthcare, employment, housing and education.
The Trump Administration’s efforts to disregard the existence of transgender, gender nonconforming and nonbinary people are fueled only by bigotry and intolerance; not science, medicine or law. Transgender people are our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers who unequivocally deserve self-determination, respect and fair treatment under the law. We will do everything in our power to defeat proposals like this one until we have secured full rights for every transgender, gender nonconforming and nonbinary person in our country.
The Center is fighting alongside civil and human rights organizations and we encourage you to join us by telling the White House that we #WontBeErased. Here are some ways that you can take action:
- Show your support for the TGNC community by joining the conversation on social media with the hashtag #WontBeErased.
- Contact your elected officials and let them know that you staunchly oppose the proposal to narrow federal definitions of gender, which would have devastating effects on access to healthcare, housing and other public services for nearly 2 million Americans. Urge them to publicly condemn these efforts to show support for the trans and gender nonconforming community.
- There will be public comment periods on these proposed rules when they’re formally published. The National Center for Transgender Equality and Transgender Law Center will have a campaign that you can join to uphold protections for TGNC people at http://ProtectTransHealth.org.
- Remember that your vote is your voice. You can show your support for the inclusion and affirmation of trans and gender nonconforming people by making sure you vote in the midterm elections on November 6th.
