The Joys of Disco Battle 1v1 Waacking Battle

November 7 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join the LGBT Center and Activist-in-Residence Dez for a vibrant waacking, punking, and posing dance competition that celebrates the queer and trans Black, Latine, and Asian legacy of disco dancing. Punking (later evolving into whacking or waacking) is a dance style that originated in the gay disco clubs of Los Angeles, California and was inspired by drag queens, comics, and old Hollywood films and actresses. Dancers will battle it out to the best disco hits to honor the dance ancestors of the past and create a deeper connection with the LGBTQ+ community of New York City in the present. Expect shocking performances, the opportunity to party to the best music of the 1970s, and vibe out in an affirming environment that uplifts queer and trans people of color. This event is free to spectate and battle. The winner receives a one-of-a-kind commemorating artwork and a cash prize.
