As warm as the summer sun, GROVE GIRLS is an inviting and celebratory documentary that profiles a vivacious collection of gay women who flocked to Cherry Grove to experience natural beauty and establish a strong community of activism and equality. Starting as a small segregated gay society and turning into a mecca for men and women from all over the world, Cherry Grove is a unique LGBTQ haven that exists on Fire Island just a few hours outside New York City, and has been a hamlet for queer culture since the early 1900’s.
From volleyball on the beach to emergency drills at the Fire House to hosting dinner parties or Community Association Board meetings, director Parker Sargent powerfully preserves their fantastic history by capturing the tales of women who fought for gay rights. And, of course, their love of that special place called Cherry Grove.
