SUMMARY:SEX WORK It’s Just a Job
DESCRIPTION:About the Film: \nSEX WORK It’s Just a Job is a powerful\, deeply human documentary that centers the voices of sex workers and organizers leading the growing movement to decriminalize consensual sex work in the United States. Every day\, people across the country are arrested\, harassed\, denied housing\, incarcerated\, and threatened by police for engaging in consensual sexual exchanges between adults. This film asks a simple but urgent question: what if the harm comes not from the work itself\, but from the laws that criminalize it? \n \nThis event will feature a film screening followed by a Q&A with the producers and sex workers featured in the film. \n \n56 minute documentary \nProducers: Tami Kashia Gold\, Bienvenida Matias\, Alex Vitale \n \nWatch the Trailer here. \n \nBuy Tickets here. \n \nThank you for supporting WTCI! At WTCI\, no one will be turned away for lack of funds and if you need assistance in affording a ticket\, please email us at admin@wtci-nyc.org

SUMMARY:AA Learned and Humbled

A.A. is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other in order that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The group hopes attendees leave the meeting thinking about the A.A.’s that paved the path for us; curious to learn about and from them\, and more importantly\, our role in becoming them for those that come after us. Learned and Humbled is a Step\, Tradition\, and Concept meeting that rotates through a four-week cycle that includes a step\, a tradition\, a concept and a speaker who shares the evolution of these ideals in their story.

SUMMARY:The Death of the Clinic: Benoît Loiseau in conversation with Sarah Schulman
DESCRIPTION:RSVP TO THIS EVENT HERE \n \nWeaving together biography\, memoir and cultural history\, The Death of the Clinic is a groundbreaking exploration of five experimental clinics in recent Western history: a sex clinic housed in a stately mansion in Weimar Berlin; a preventive health centre in pre-NHS London; a post-war institute of psychiatry and medical philosophy in a French château; a feminist health centre born from the women’s liberation movement in Geneva; and a grassroots research initiative featuring clinical trials run by and for people with AIDS in 1980s–90s New York.  \n \nLoiseau’s investigation is anchored in his own encounters with medical care and in the quiet influence of one health worker who shaped his life: his mother. In moving and reflective interludes addressed to her\, Loiseau illuminates the emotional and ethical stakes of medicine. Reframing Michel Foucault’s seminal book\, Loiseau’s The Death of the Clinic is a radical invitation to rethink the clinic – not as a fixed institution but as a living\, evolving practice rooted in care\, resistance and collective imagination. \nThere will be a signing after the event. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. \n \nBenoît Loiseau is a writer\, critic and scholar of French and comparative literature. A founding editor of queer anthology The BitterSweet Review\, he has written for ArtReview\, frieze\, the Guardian\, the New York Times and The White Review. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at New York University and Paris 8 University. The Death of the Clinic (Fitzcarraldo Editions / Yale University Press\, 2026) is his first book. His next book\, provisionally titled The Queer Art of Autofabulation: Disobedient Self-Fictions After HIV/AIDS\, is forthcoming with NYU Press. \n \nSarah Schulman is a novelist\, playwright\, screenwriter\, nonfiction writer\, and AIDS historian. She teaches creative writing at Northwestern University and is on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace. Her 21st book is The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity.  \n \nThe Bureau of General Services—Queer Division is Manhattan’s only queer bookstore\, located on the second floor of the LGBT Center. We’re open Tuesday-Sunday from 1-7pm and accessible by the 6th Ave 1 2 3 L trains and 8th Ave A C E trains. Our cafe\, The Bureau Cafe\, is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9am-7pm.  \nAdvance Praise \n \n‘…Benoît Loiseau offers us a different way through twentieth-century queer and trans histories… This is a stunning book that juxtaposes fine-grained histories of medicine\, anarchy\, psychiatry and resistance.’—Jack Halberstam\, author of Anarchitecture After Everything: A Trans Manifesto \n \n‘…an inspiring\, essential book.’ —Chris Kraus\, author of The Four Spent the Day Together \n \n‘…this is a book of a generation with the potential to make\, and remake\, the world.’ — Joseph Osmundson\, author of Spawning Season: An Experiment in Queer Parenthood \n \n‘Intimate and erudite\, breathtaking in its historical analysis and philosophical range…’ — Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore\, author of Terry Dactyl

SUMMARY:Rooted in the Work: a reading
DESCRIPTION:RSVP TO THIS EVENT HERE \n \nJoin us for an intimate evening of storytelling\, conversation\, and community featuring two original short stories written and shared by formerly incarcerated men. Their stories move through childhood\, family\, violence\, incarceration\, Rikers Island\, survival\, institutional power\, freedom\, and the complicated experience of building a life after it all. \n \nThis isn’t a panel or a lecture about incarceration. It’s an opportunity to hear directly from people who have lived through systems that are so often discussed\, studied\, funded\, and interpreted by everyone except the people who experienced them. As one of the writers says\, “For all the institutions that capitalized from us…” this evening creates space for them to tell their own stories\, in their own voices\, and on their own terms. \n \nThere will be two readings followed by a conversation and time to connect with one another. Some of what you’ll hear is heavy\, some of it is funny\, some of it may be uncomfortable\, and all of it comes from people who have something worth saying about survival\, incarceration\, family\, community\, and what happens after you come home. \n \nMost importantly\, this is meant to feel like a room you can actually be in. Come listen\, talk\, meet people\, support the work\, and kick it with us. As the brothers put it themselves\, “Relax\, we got plenty for you to see.” \nHosted in Partnership with Rooted in the Work  \n \nRooted in the Work is an organization working at the intersection of prison education\, storytelling\, and lived experience. Founded by Vidya Dwarakanath\, author of We Survived Rikers Island\, RTW brings together people directly impacted by incarceration\, educators\, artists\, and communities to create conversations and experiences rooted in what people have actually lived. Through storytelling\, events\, workshops\, and consulting\, Rooted in the Work brings lived experience into rooms where people can listen\, question\, create\, connect\, and imagine what should exist next. \n \nAngel Santana is a writer\, performer\, and facilitator whose work is grounded in the power of storytelling and human connection. A compelling communicator with a commanding presence\, Angel creates space for reflection\, dialogue\, and meaningful engagement. Across his creative and community-based work\, he brings an ability to focus a room around the ideas and experiences that deserve its attention. \n \nTony Acevedo is an educator and storyteller who brings warmth\, humor\, and humanity to his work. His approach reflects a belief that meaningful learning and serious conversation can coexist with joy\, curiosity\, and genuine connection. Through education\, writing\, and dialogue\, Tony creates environments where people can engage difficult subjects while remaining connected to one another. \n \nChristian Gonzalez is an entrepreneur\, creative\, and community builder with a collaborative approach to leadership. His interests span entrepreneurship\, culture\, and creative expression\, and he brings a natural ability to connect people and strengthen the relationships around him. Thoughtful and grounded\, Christian’s work reflects a belief in creating environments where people feel supported\, valued\, and able to contribute.
