Provenance

The majority of the Visual Collection is comprised of anonymous donations to the Archive, in addition to smaller documented donations.

Scope and Content

The Visual Collection consists of images, articles, portraits, and artwork or personal memorabilia by, of, and about LGBTQ+ people or spaces from about 1902 to 2014. Topics of interest include Pride Marches (1970-2002), The Center, political demonstrations (1965-1989) and various LGBTQ+ organizations. Notable subjects and creators include Marsha P. Johnson, Storme DeLarverie, Vito Russo, Richard Wandel, Marc Rubin, SAGE, the Gay Activists Alliance, GAY Magazine, the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard, and the Gay Games. The collection consists of mostly photographs, both personal and artistic, as well as negatives, slides, advertisements, postcards, greeting cards, and sketches. While the majority of images are of or in New York City, the postcards and greeting cards are from various places in the United States and Europe.
