Rudy Grillo Collection

Provenance
These records were donated to the LGBT Community Center National History Archive by Rudy Grillo on May 17, 1990. Mr. Grillo was with the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee from 1973 to 1976 and was designated by the Committee as a keeper of their records until an appropriate repository could be found. Additional material, including three audio tapes, and papers from 1976 to 1978 were added by Mr. Grillo in 1992. The bulk of the collection including most of the papers and the majority of audio tapes were donated to the Archive by the Grillo estate in 1997.
Scope and Content
The Rudy Grillo Collection consists of a wide of variety of materials ranging from paper-based items, to photographs, videotapes, and audiotapes. They date from 1956 to 1994.
Among the paper-based materials are numerous essays written by Rudy Grillo and dealing with gay issues, such as the Stonewall Rebellion and homosexuals in popular songs. They also reflect Rudy Grillo’s involvement with the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee (CSLDC) and the Gay Activists Alliance, including meeting minutes, correspondence, press releases, calendars and financial records. Program notes from Rudy Grillo’s WBAI talk-show, “Gay Rap,” and correspondence with the staff of WBAI are also included.
The 12 inches of photographs includes photos of Grillo with his family and friends (1950s to 1990s) and pictures of gay pride parades (1970s to 1990s). Other Gay Pride events are also included among these pictures. They include photographs of CSLDC Meetings.
There are three films, an 8 MM film of Muscle Beach, CA and Alley-Pond Park, NYC shot in the 1950s, a Super 8 MM, of the Central Park Rambles, NYC, and other locales in 1974, and a Super 8 MM consisting of a “View From Roof-145 E. 27th St.” of the Puerto-Rican Day Parade in June 1978, Madison Square Fair in June 1979 and Pier 42, Greenwich Village, shot in June 1978.
There are a great many audiotapes, both reel to reel and cassette, of WBAI Programs hosted by Rudy Grillo from 1978 to 1980. They include such themes as: “Gay Moments in Straight Music, “Gay Rap Presents”, “Minette: Recollections of a Part Time Lady” and an audio-tape of the Christmas Concert of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus in December of 1980. Other tapes include interviews with activist and commentary on gay related nes items. Some audiotapes of radio programs made by KPFA, the California-based Pacifica Radio station, are also in the collection. There is a cassette interview with filmmaker Pier Paolo Passolini in 1966 and three cassette tapes of general meetings of the Gay Activists Alliance. Most if not all of the reel to reel tapes have cassette copies. All cassette tapes have been transfered to a server and are readily available to researchers.
History or Bio
Rudy Grillo was a member of the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, the Gay Activists Alliance, and a producer for community-based radio station WBAI, the New York station of the Pacifica Radio network. Host of WBAI’s “Gay Rap,” Grillo was also the station’s Program Director of the Gay Men’s Department from 1980 until its dissolution in 1982.
The Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee was the original organizer, starting in 1970, of the New York Gay Pride march and rally. At first a committee of representatives from various organizations, they later became fully independent. They continued to be the organizers of Gay Pride until replaced by Heritage of Pride in 1984.
