These papers were in the possession of Richard Burns until 1990 when he donated them to the National History Archive.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the private papers of Mr. Burns. In addition, the collection contains many documents related to the organizations, mostly based in Boston, of which Mr. Burns was a member. These documents include steering, board, membership, and committee meeting notes, financial reports, internal correspondence, event planning details, mailings, flyers, as well as policy, by-law, and hiring documents relating primarily to the following organizations: Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Gay Community News, Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association, Boston Lesbian and Gay Political Alliance, Human Rights Campaign Fund, and Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders. Furthermore, the collection includes several photos of the 1982 Gay Community News office fire in folders 39 and 186. A complete manuscript of Eric Rofes’s novel “Socrates, Plato and Guys Like Me” can be found in folder 223.

History or Bio

Richard Burns, a graduate of Hamilton College, began work as a volunteer news reporter and office manager in 1977 at the Gay Community News of Boston, Mass. He became managing editor in 1978, and in 1980 President of its Board of Directors. He co-founded Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, Inc. of Boston in 1978, and served as president of its Board of Directors from its inception to 1986. He graduated from Northeastern University Law School in 1983, and was admitted to the bar. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Lambda Defense and Education Fund from 1980 to 1983, and of the National Education Foundation for Individual Rights, Inc. from 1981 to 1983. Mr. Burns co-founded the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association in 1983 and served as its co-chair through 1986. He was editor of the National Lesbian and Gay Attorney’s Referral Directory and Co-editor of Gay Jubilee. He became Executive Director of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center (New York City) in 1986.
