Scope and Content
The collection contains 3 boxes, measuring 36 inches, of photos, negatives and slides. Square brackets, i.e. […], indicate additions supplied by the archivist. All other notations were present on the original folders and slide boxes. The subjects of the collection include individuals, organizations and social scenes (including demonstrations and marches). This is a valuable source for images of ACT UP, Queer Nation and individuals involved in AIDS activism from 1989–1991.
History or Bio
The publication was founded in 1989 by Kendal Morrison and Gabriel Rotello. The first issue came out on 6/26/1989. OutWeek was known for its support of AIDS activism and was one of the first publications to voice active support for organizations such as Queer Nation and ACT UP. The publication characterized itself through embracing ‘outing’ as a legitimate tactic for raising AIDS awareness. OutWeek ceased publication in June of 1991 due to staff conflict and financial difficulties.
