Scope and Content
This collection contains journals kept while living in Spain in the first half of the 1970s and in New York City and then Rhinebeck, NY, after 1975. Journals continue through 2003. Most books contain taped or pasted photos, newspaper clippings, advertisements, emails, playbills, and other paraphernalia that are cited directly in the text. Early content focuses extensively on a single romantic pursuit of a heterosexually-married male Spaniard while McCausland was living in Madrid on work for a large multi-national corporation. Journals from the early 1980s in New York City and Fire Island also feature romantic and sexual encounters. In 1985 McCausland settled in Rhinebeck, NY, with his partner. This collection is appropriate for anyone interested in sexual mores of gyms in the 1970s and 80s, a history of American gay men living abroad, or an extensive visual representation of a gay man’s life over twenty-five years.
