Scope and Content

The Sharmat Papers document gay women’s athletics in the 1980s and 90s, including Gay Women’s Athletic Club party flyers, newsletter and certificate of incorporation (January 24, 1990); Federation of Gay Games newsletters and oganizing materials; game and player stats of New York women softball players (1983) and editorial “In Defense of Pitchers”; Federation of Gay Games Roster (January 15, 1995); film negatives of Gay Games and Team NY event; 5 autographed softballs.

The collection also includes 3 journals and an AIDS caretaking story (gay woman caring for a gay man); the journals include Sharmat’s account of a publicly-visible court case from the early 2000s about child visitation rights against her female ex-partner, as well as a related clip from the Lesbian and Gay New York News.

History or Bio

Lee P. Sharmat has worked as a co-host on the TV news program Gay USA, served on the board of the ’94 Gay Games, and in the 2000s has worked as a librarian, teacher and debate coach at ACORN Community High School. She is a veteran softball umpire, archivist for the Cherry Grove Arts Project Archives, and involved in Fire Island/Cherry Grove community productions. She was featured among “100 Women We Love” by Go Mag, June 14, 2013.
