Use Restrictions

Letter of Agreement dated January 29, 2004:

Concerning March Registration forms, volunteer sign-up/registration/check-in & rosters or any other lists of volunteers and signatories of contracts: no individual’s names or contact information may be published or exhibited until 75 years after the creation of the document; once an individual is publicly known as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender; or permission is received from the individual.

Scope and Content

Records of Heritage of Pride (HOP) and its predecessor, Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee (CSLDC), were turned over to the Archive in March 2004 with later additions. Heritage of Pride is the volunteer non-profit organization which plans and sponsors the annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Week in June of each year in celebration of the June 27, 1969 Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village. The history of the organization is included below; for a more in-depth history, ask the archivist for an extended timeline.

The records include the HOP committee minutes, march registration forms, rally records, dance records and PrideFest records for various years, plus pieces of the CSLDC history. Records in this collection also contain information on regional, national and international Pride-coordinating organizations. Included, as well, are five audio tapes which have been copied to the Center’s server and eight VHS tapes which have been copied to DVD.

History or Bio

June 27, 1969 marks the occasion of when members of the LGBT+ community fought against police forces engaging in a raid on the gay bar, Stonewall Inn, on Christopher Street in New York City’s Greenwich Village. A “Gay Power” rally was held a month later on July 27, 1969 in Washington Square Park.

On June 28, 1970 the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee (CSLDC, the predecessor to HOP) and some 2,000 people marched up 6th Avenue to a “Gay-In” in Sheeps Meadow, Central Park. This March tradition continued each year on the last Sunday in June by CSLDC until 1984. That year many of the CSLDC Board members resigned and the remaining organizers formed Heritage of Pride. HOP mobilized with more organized efforts; the first march permit for Pride was issued by the City and HOP eventually became a non-profit corporation. The Christopher Street Festival — a Pride event sponsored by nearby gay bars and held in the Village on the day of the March every year — was reorganized by HOP as PrideFest after 1993. That same year, HOP assisted in sponsoring the Rally, the Dance on the Pier, the Rapture on the River, as well as the award ceremony held in the following fall.

Heritage of Pride is a member of the National Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators (NALGPC) and International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators (IAL/GPC), and Northeast Regional Conference (NERP). The folder list include some of the records of these organizations.

HERITAGE OF PRIDE STATEMENT OF INCLUSION

“Heritage of Pride is a wholly volunteer-managed, non-partisan, tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation that organizes LGBT Pride events in New York City to commemorate and celebrate the Stonewall Riots [June 27, 1969]. These events are organized for and on behalf of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and groups, and all others who support the struggle for the liberation of these communities. In the spirit of Stonewall, Heritage of Pride welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender, gender identification, HIV status, national origin, physical, mental or developmental ability, race, religion, or sexual orientation.”
