Collection #48

FBI Files

Record:48
Date:1953 - 1970
Size:2.5 feet

Provenance

This collection was donated by Martin Duberman. According to Duberman, the journalist Duncan Osborne sued the government to obtain copies of the files. Duberman then paid $500-600 dollars to have them copied for his own records until donating them to The Center Archive.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of material the Federal Bureau of Investigation collected on various homophile and gay liberation groups including the Mattachine Society, Gay Liberation Front, the North American Conference of Homophile Organizations, and the National Planning Conference of Homophile Organizations, etc., as well as other active organizations such as Students for a Democratic Society and the Black Panthers. The records are largely censored and/or redacted throughout. Information on particular organizations is often inaccurate; the collection, therefore, says more about the FBI than it does about the gay liberation movement.

History or Bio

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of The Department of Justice, followed what the government considered subversive groups. This collection represents some of the materials they collected on gay liberation groups 1953-1970.
