Scope and Content

This collection includes Harold Kooden’s written and email correspondence with collaborators in the various domestic and international health and public policy organizations in which he participated in the 1980s and 1990s. There are also memoranda circulated, minutes taken at meetings, and brochures published by the different organizations. Major issues debated include recommendations for (and denunciations of) the treatment of gay and lesbian persons throughout the world, gay and lesbian representation in international forums such as the United Nations, the response by New York City authorities to mental and physical health matters affecting gays and lesbians (including but not limited to AIDS), and the planning and execution of meetings, conferences, and other public manifestations of gay and lesbian rights.

History or Bio

Harold Kooden is a clinical psychologist who was particularly active in a number of health and public policy issues affecting the lesbian and gay communities throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Since 1985, he has worked with the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) and the American Psychological Association (APA). He has also been a member of the Association of Lesbian and Gay Psychologists (ALGP), the National Gay Health Education Foundation, and the Mayor’s Inter-Agency Task Force on AIDS; Co-chair of the Committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues in Mental Health; and Treasurer of the Breakfast Forum (a group focused on discussing public policy matters in the gay and lesbian community). He is the co-author, along with Charles Flowers, of the volume Golden Men: The Power of Gay Midlife (2000).
