History or Bio

David Allyn graduated from Brown University in 1991 with an honors degree in Literature and Society. He received his Ph.D. in History from Harvard University in 1996 and currently teaches at Princeton University. His articles have appeared in the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, the New York Daily News and the Journal of American Studies. He has appeared on CNN and MSNBC and has lectured on the sexual revolution at conferences and colleges across the country.
Quote from bool review:
“In an unprecedented look at the personalities, events, and ideas that shaped one of the greatest upheavals of American society, David Allyn approaches the subject of the sexual revolution with a meticulous combination of historical facts and enthusiastic personal accounts. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR: THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION: AN UNFETTERED HISTORY (Little, Brown and Company) is the first serious treatment of the changes in daily life in the 1960s and ’70s that inspired a new age of sexual openness in American society. First hand accounts, diaries, interviews, and period research meld to reveal changes in private lives and public discourse from the fearful ’50s, to the first tremors of rebellion in the early ’60s, to the heady heyday of the Revolution.
MAKE LOVE NOT WAR intertwines the stories of the major players of the revolution–sexual freedom fighters, feminists, scientists, pornographers, gay activists, First Amendment lawyers, and others who made the headlines–with the testimony of ordinary people–men and women who dared to take risks in their private lives and share their experiences with others. Allyn brilliantly illustrates how the yearning for a freer, more open society brought these various and diverse people together. In Allyn’s extraordinary book, the sexual revolution is intimately depicted through:
A personal interview with Sex and the Single Girl author, Helen Gurley Brown
The evolution of ‘the pill’ and how it allowed women to have ‘worry-free sex any time, any place’
Stories of spouse swapping, swinging, group sex, and other erotic adventures
Personal interviews with gays and lesbians who lived through bar raids and ‘moral squads’
Photos of hippies, gays, and lesbians demonstrating, nude and otherwise, for their sexual freedom
Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner’s hatred of and intent to destroy the feminist movement.”
