2020

Annual Report

This past year was anything but business as usual for The Center. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about many new challenges for The Center and the entire LGBTQ community. In response, we adapted the way we work quickly, using virtual solutions to better serve our community through difficult times.

The Center shifted all our services to be offered remotely, including counseling, substance use treatment, insurance enrollment navigation, arts and culture events, and more.

Our staff implemented a new web chat option for connecting to support, in recognition of the fact that not everyone has the ability, privacy, or safety to connect via phone or email.

We developed a COVID-19 Resource Portal to better help our community get to know our virtual programming and connect to resources and support groups.

And we did this just in time, as we saw a 40% increase in demand for services like mental health counseling and substance use treatment throughout the pandemic. This quick work to respond to the community’s most urgent needs meant that we were able to provide support to LGBTQ people, even outside of New York.

During times of incredible change and uncertainty, we created connections through advocacy, and made progress for our community.

We organized and activated our community to complete the 2020 Census and get out the vote to secure the representation, resources, and power that LGBTQ folks deserve.

We grew our network of RiseOut activists, providing opportunities for the community to take direct action on important issues, refine their activism skills, and connect to others at monthly virtual RiseOut Action Team meetings.

We united with over 300 LGBTQ organizations against racial violence and intentionally followed the lead of organizations working to dismantle systems of oppression and uplift Black communities.

Community is, and always will be, at the heart of what we do. This year we found ways to be together, even when we’re apart.

Over 700 people participated in C4C: The 275 Challenge, a virtual event which raised over $950,000 for The Center’s remote services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We created a virtual Town Hall for community members to get information about our remote services and operations, and to discuss how we could continue to support LGBTQ New Yorkers through the pandemic.

Garden Party, our annual Pride celebration, also went virtual with a free online program including performances from Lea DeLaria, Mx Justin Vivian Bond, The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus, and more.

We moved our all-staff gatherings online and created new ways for staff to stay connected.
