Recent disappointments in vaccine and microbicide studies are prompting questions about the next steps for HIV prevention research. Meanwhile, the CDC is expected to announce an increase in the annual number of new HIV infections in the United States, which will provoke scrutiny of CDC-validated interventions that have been shown to decrease risk behavior - but not new infections.

As the probability of a "magic bullet" to prevent HIV started to seem increasingly unlikely in the near future, the NIH slashed funding for U.S. prevention research and the CDC released data showing a disconnect between risk behavior and high HIV rates in some communities.

The history of HIV treatment advocacy shows that sustained, creative work by community activists has resulted in effective treatment options that have lengthened and improved the lives of many people with HIV/AIDS. Now, community activists are coming together to build new alliances for prevention research advocacy.

How can we influence prevention research and translate the results into strategies to end the epidemic? How can, and should, prevention trials be conducted in the United States? And what can we learn from new pilot studies of Black men who have sex with men, and women facing high rates of infection - including transgender women?

Join us to discuss these and other critical issues that confront prevention research in the United States. Speakers Include:
Julie Davids - CHAMP
Beryl Koblin - Project Achieve
Monica Ruiz - amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research
