Even in high schools it is a common theme to bully members of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/ transexual, questioning) community. In 2002, at Highland Park Community High School, 10 students savagely beat a freshman student for alleged rumors that signified that he was gay. The freshman was in

be many vigils and other events across the country on Thursday; there is likely to be one near you if you live near a city or university. In NYC, some of these events include a vigil at Housing Works in East New York, Brooklyn and an event organized by the Gender Identity Project at the Center (thanks to the SRLP website for this info). There will also be a TDOR service this Wednesday at 12pm at the Union Theological Seminary, organized by their Queer Caucus (James Chapel, 121st and Broadway - thanks for the info, Lissa.)

Thousands Rally, TV Star Comes Out for Marriage Equality
Thousands rallied at City Hall on Saturday in support of marriage rights for gay folks. California's passage of Proposition 8 spurred the demo, but the tone as portrayed in this video from New York's LGBT Center was more forward-looking, with speakers (including council speaker Christine Quinn, councilmember Rosie Mendez, assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, and MTV's Kim Stolz) urging mobilization and continued activism. Similar rallies were held in

Transitioning: Finding support, creating support and being positive about it
transguys to find resources and support groups. Most work is being done to address needs of transwomen while the guys get kinda left out. I’m very thankful to be in NYC where the LGBTQ Center has a support group dedicated to those who fit onto the Masculine Spectrum (an important note: this group is designed for anyone who identifies as “masculine”, not just those going through medical transition). A few thoughts first: Your family will always love you. They may not understand and it may take time for them

Keri's Journey
This has been on my mind of late, and then I got an e-mail from New York’s Gender Identity Project (if you live in the metro area, check them out..) about upcoming events. They will be hosting an evening of reflection on the 20th at the Gay Center in Manhattan, from 7pm til 8:30p. Part of the reflection will include a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence. I would very much like to do something, and I may see if I can work this out in some way. So, what is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, you ask?

Currently in exile in suburbia, with McCain signs on either side of me (lovely people, though, I’ll be the first to say), I needed to go vote at the Gay and Lesbian Center in the West Village, my polling place since the moment I turned 18. The line was around the block; we waited 45 minutes and I loved every second. And can I just add, even more than the racial history we made, I’m thrilled that America elected a

The LGBT Community Center where I work is the polling place for the local election districts. They put out 16 machines yesterday expecting a big turnout. The voting is held in the first floor hall where the dances also happen hence the disco balls. What's the fun of voting without a little glitter?
